Close-up, moving through the room. I work in small groups, so nobody sits at the back and nobody is left out. This is what suits a garden party or anything where guests are eating, drinking and moving around.
Parlor, everyone seated. A seated show for roughly twenty to forty people. Everyone in one place, facing the same way, for fifteen to thirty minutes. For a milestone birthday or an anniversary this is often the better choice, because it gives the evening a centrepiece.
Stage, for a bigger room. For a big hall or a large family gathering, a full show with sound. Worth it when the room is too large for people to gather round comfortably.
I have performed for a hundred and twenty people at a backyard party in Clarkston and for far smaller groups indoors. Close-up scales in a way a stage show cannot, because I keep moving. A parlor set does the opposite, it pulls everyone into one place. Both work, they just do different jobs.
For a milestone birthday I will happily build a moment around the guest of honour. It costs me a little preparation and it is the part people remember.
For close-up, somewhere to park and a bit of room to work. No stage, no sound, no lighting. A parlor set needs a spot for me to stand where everyone can see, and a room that will go reasonably quiet. If it is outdoors I just need somewhere level and out of direct wind.

I have worked rooms from twenty to two hundred and fifty. Under forty and seated, a parlor set is usually the best value. Over a hundred and moving around, close-up covers the room better.
